Peterborough RUFC

25 - 24

(HT 0-0)

Wellingborough RFC

Peterborough RUFC 1st Team played their first home game of the new season and came away with a hard fought win over visitors Wellingborough RUFC by 25-24. The result topped off a great weekend for the Fengate based club as all the Senior sides won. The Senior Ladies beat Bletchley Ladies 78-0, the Centurions over came St Ives 2s by 56-36 and the Colts got the weekend started by beating Wellingborough Colts 24-21.

Peterborough started brightly and were soon on the score board through a try to Pat Webb. The visitors hit back straight away with a converted try to take a 7-5 lead. The home side were then quickly ahead after Robert Moulds scored a great try after being put though a gap by Byron Van Uden who also converted to give the home side the lead again. The visitors however were having their own success and scored 2 more tries to go ahead. Van Uden kicked a penalty to end the half with Borough trailing at halftime by 19-15 with neither side in complete control.

The second half was much the same as the first with neither side dominating the other. Van Uden kept the home side with in touching distance of Wellingborough with another penalty kick only for Wellingborough to score a try to take a 24-18 lead with only 5 minutes to play. The young Borough side didn't give up and after more sustained pressure Van Uden found Lawrence Teague with a little bit of space who managed to get on the outside of the Wellingborough defender and score a well taken try much to the delight of the home crowd. Van Uden kicked the conversion to give the home side a one point lead. Borough held out the visitors last desperate waves of attack and had their first win of the season 25-24.

Director of Rugby Shane Mannings comments " it wasn't pretty but we will take it. We lost twice to Wellingborough last season so it feels good to get the win. Our young lads are a work in progress and did make hard work of it but they will learn from games like that. Alfie Lewis had another strong game for us and Byron's kicking was really good in windy conditions. As is the case in this league we have an even tougher game next Saturday when we travel to Broadstreet in Conventry. Broadstreet have come down from the league above so are unknown to us. We are expecting a very physical game and will have to play at our best for 80 minutes to get a result".
