Wellingborough RFC

24 - 33

(HT 0-0)

Peterborough RUFC

Peterborough RUFC were on the road this past Saturday and came away with 33-24 victory at Wellingborough which the host's had termed as the battle of the "Boroughs". The win would be the Fengate sides 3rd in a row and also their second away win of the season pushing them up to 6th place in Regional 2 East Midlands.

A typical slow start by the visitors saw them fall behind after Welling had scored a penalty and a converted try. After coming to terms with the referees interpretation of the laws Borough grew into the game and after some sustained pressure, scored a converted try to scrum half Pat Webb. Welling were still causing the visitors defence trouble and had another converted try and penalty kick to take them to a good 17-7 lead. Borough hit back on the stroke of halftime with another try to scrum half Webb after a quickly taken penalty saw him force his way over from 5 metres out. At halftime the home side had a slim 17-14 lead with neither team in complete control.

Borough have had a habit of being slow starters in the second half but with fly half Byron Van Uden directing the side well Borough controlled the next 30 minutes. With centre Ian Williams, flanker Rob Moulds and prop Chris Sykes punching holes through the heart of the Welling defence Borough were spending large periods in the opposition half. Another try to Webb giving him three for the game was followed by another to prop Daniel Nunn who forced his way over from a pick and go and then Hooker Miguel Alves ran onto a lovely pass from lock James Prewer to score. With Van Uden converting four of the tries Borough had a commanding lead. The last ten minutes became very disjointed with both sides losing players to the sin bin. Welling would have the last say in the contest when they scored their only try of the second half.. Borough were winners by 33-24. A good result away from home but there will be tougher games ahead.

Director of Rugby Shane Manning's comments " another great result on the road. We still have some senior players out injured so that makes this an even bigger win. Sam Crooks(head coach) ,Brendan Burke(backs coach) and Andrew Dewdney(forwards coach) are doing a great job with the young lads and are building some really good foundations for the future. We have one game left before the Xmas break. Broadstreet will be the opposition next week and pose a real threat, they have come down from the league above have the experience and quality that his hard to over come. But with a couple weeks rest coming up for the lads I expect them to give their all, if they can do that we will give ourselves a chance."
