History was made this weekend as Peterborough ladies beat Bedford Blues, in the last league game of the 2024/2025 season, to win the league as undefeated champions, winning 12 from 12 games.
Peterborough were keen to show Bedford why they were league leaders, scoring the opening try after just 2 minutes, with centre, Sarah Winder, out pacing and brushing away tackles to score under the posts. The tempo was then raised to keep the defence on their toes. Tries were scored out wide by winger, Penny Woods, putting our prop, Charlotte Cameron, into space to crash through and second row, Georgie Sheridan, supporting the backs to score the fourth try of the first half. Two conversions for Maddy Buckland.
Half time score 24 - 0.
The attack was relentless and the second half started in much the same way with number 8, Cheryl Smith, smashing her way up the pitch to score under the posts, converted by Maddy. Solid scrums from Peterborough, gave the backs a great platform to work with, getting the ball through the hands to winger, Annie Fenton, sprinting past the opposition to run in under the posts. An unlucky bounce off the posts denying the conversion. Shortly after saw the our other winger, Hannah Longley, charging up the sideline, offering the pop pass back inside to centre, George Nicholls, to score out wide, not converted. Bedford still had wind in their sails with 10 minutes to go and utilised their forwards to trundle the ball up the park. Peterborough defence was impressive, holding up a number of tries, but Bedford eventually got through to score a converted try. Last try of the game came from Peterborough from a penalty, 15 metres out from the try line, two forward moves, out to the backs for Sarah Winder to score her second. Converted by George Nicholls.
