Oadby Wyggestonian RFC

20 - 38

(HT 0-0)

Peterborough RUFC

Peterborough RUFC produced a very good performance away at Oadby Wyggs on Saturday, coming away with 38-20 win. Borough's coaches had asked for a response after a lacklustre display the previous week and the team delivered with the clubs first win at Oadby since 2017. The side welcomed back Captain Luke Swindells who was playing his first game since the first game of the season where he had suffered a dislocated elbow. Also Dave Harding-Prior, Harry Anderson, Liam Shields and Tom Kemp came into the side.

Borough struck first with a well worked converted try finished off by Dylan Evans. Oadby then had their best period in the game which saw them capitalise on some ill discipline from Borough to score with two well taken penalty kicks which was then followed up by a well taken converted try. When Borough did finally get some much needed territory and possession they managed to close out the half with Evans scoring his second try after running on to a deft pass from fly half Liam Shields to bring an end to the half and retake the lead 14-13, a lead which Borough wouldn't surrender for the rest of the match.

The start of the second half has been an issue at times for Borough this season but that would not be the case in this game. Oadby were still proving hard to breakdown at times but Borough were having success across the pitch. Three more converted tries to Borough sealed the game with Alfie Lewis scoring two after some very direct pick and go from the forwards and then Rob Jacobs scored after some relentless pressure from Borough saw him run through some tiring home defence. Fly half Shields was in top form with the boot converting all of Borough's tries and also a penalty kick. Oadby though would have the last say when they scored a consolation try towards the end of the game. The final score of 38-20 was very much deserved for Borough who have struggled away from home in recent times.

Director of Rugby Shane Manning's comment's " one of the more pleasing aspects was seeing the lads put into practice instructions and work they had done at training . Winning at Oadby for the first time in 8 seasons is a really good milestone to. Young Harry Anderson was playing his first game this season for the first team after some really good performances in our 2s and was outstanding I thought, his defence is top notch and he always makes his tackles. In general though it was a good team performance. We now focus on Wellingborough in our last home game of the year. We had a good win against them earlier in the season and they are bottom of the league. But we know what its like to be in their position and they will be desperate to get their first win of the season. We cant take them likely at all so we will need to be switched on and play as though its the team coming first in the league."
