Peterborough RUFC made the trip to Coventry this past Saturday to take on 3rd placed Broadstreet in Regional 2 East Midlands action and had to settle for a 24 for all draw. Borough still came away with three competitions points, 2 for the draw and 1 for scoring four tries to leave them in 5th place. The squad was once again without several regular starters due to a long injury list so Borough will be happy they were able to come away with some points from the game.
Borough fell behind after a sluggish start saw the home side score an easy try after some poor defence. Borough began having success with some of their bigger ball runners making inroads and it was after one such that they had their first points when Rob Jacobs finished off a Man of the Match Alfie Lewis break to score a converted try. The rest of the half was to be very frustrating for Head Coach Sam Crooks with his side trying to play far to much rugby from their own half and also trying to offload rather than just taking the tackle. Combined with some wayward kicking Borough kept giving Broadstreet easy possession and territory which they used to score again to take a 12 points to 7 halftime lead.
Peterborough were very frustrated at halftime as they were causing themselves all sorts of problems. With the pitch starting to cut up badly Borough would need to play a far more physical style of rugby to have a chance of getting anything from the game. Broadstreet however were still living off Borough mistakes and ran in two quick tries right after the break to take a daunting 24-7 lead. With all the work to do Borough finally found the spark they needed through their scrum and maul. Props Dan Nunn and Chris Sykes began to dominate their opposition at every scrum and gave their side repeated penalties. For once Borough stuck with what was working and outmuscled Broadstreet. First player coach Sam Crooks scored two back to back close range tries and Rob Jacobs had his second, with the scores now locked at 24 all Jacobs had his chance to win it with a conversion but unfortunately hit the post. With time almost up Borough had one more chance to score but for once their lineout let them down and they had to settle for the draw.
Director of Rugby Shane Manning's Comments " definitely one that got away. If the lads had just trusted the game plan for the whole game we would of won by 40 plus points. But with the injury crisis we have at the moment we would of taken the 3 points at the beginning of the day. Alfie Lewis is starting to show some of his form from last year now and had very strong game. Dan Nunn and Chris Sykes scrummaged really well gained us lots of penalties as well. We are back at home this week against Old Coventrians, we will still be without a number of regulars so it will be a tough game despite their league placing at the moment. Our depth is being really tested at present so another test will await."
