Last season, Peterbough ladies put out their first development squad in a very sucessful game against Kesteven. As the ladies squad continues to grow at Peterborough, there will be a development game once a month giving our newer players a chance to get more rugby experience. This month we were off to play against Ampthill for a game of 11 a-side.
With the first third underway, Peterborough were the more cohesive team and were able to put Penny Woods into some space to score under the posts, and take the conversion (0 - 7). Penny was controlling the game from fly-half and a lovely kick-over the defence saw Peterborough recover the ball and heading back towards the try line. However, Ampthill's defence recovered quickly and had Peterborough going back through the attacking phases. The ball was soon to be in the hands of one of our newest players, Paulina Gorczyca, on the wing and the tackle didn't stop her for stretching over the line to make it 0 - 12. Next up was Ampthill's winger to gather the ball and sprint down the pitch to score out wide and end the third (5 - 12).
The second third was 10 a-side and there was a real arm wrestle for possession, both teams sizing each other up. It was Sav Evans who was able to penetrate the defensive line, after a turnover at the lineout, and score the only try of the quarter (5 - 17).
With the luxury of subs, Peterborough lent a couple of players to the opposition for a 12 a-side game. The forwards were going through the phases, another great run from Sav created the space for Steff De Gracia to test her speed as she ran almost half the pitch to score (5 - 22) and converted by Penny (5 - 24). Followed shortly by Liv Smith having a run up the pitch, a fantastic tackle from Ampthill pushing her over the line for a try (5 - 29), converted by Penny (5 - 31). There was a beautiful passage of play from the backs between Darcie, Sarah and Paulina. Unfortunately Paulina was snippered and knocked the ball on just short of the try line. Not to be deterred, Peterborough won Amthill's lineout, shipped the ball through the backs for Sarah Winder to score on the far side (5 - 36). Peterborough were really getting into the flow now, jackling and some lovely moves in the backs giving another debutant, Darcie Tergerdine, chance to run a try in (5 - 41). Last play of the game saw Sarah score her second try of the game and converted by Penny (5 - 48).
Smiles all round for the players, just happy to be playing rugby.
