Wellingborough RFC

36 - 60

(HT 0-0)

Peterborough RUFC

Peterborough RUFC made the trip to Wellingborough on Saturday looking to continue their winning start to the season. As the scoreline of 60-36 suggest Peterborough dominated for large parts of the game but are still yet to complete a 80 minute performance.

With the set piece working well the Borough had ample ball to set their backline free. Rob Jacobs got the first try after 2 minutes and from there Peterborough were firmly in control apart from the odd lack of concentration. Further tries from Ian Williams , 2 from Nick Langton and 1 from Dylan Evans pushed the score out. Byron Van Uden converted 4 of the tries. Wellingborough to their credit never threw in the towel and scored 2 tries. Half time saw Borough with a very healthy lead of 33-10 and the message from Head Coach Sam Crooks was for more concentration in particular when in defence.

The first 20 minutes of the second half saw exactly what the Peterborough coaches were after. Further tries from Josh Casbon, Sio Ma'asi, Pat Webb and a second from Dylan Evans confirmed the result and really showed the improvement the Peterborough backs in particular have had under Backs coach Brendan Burke. The last 20 minutes saw Borough lose their shape, possibly thinking the game was won Borough failed to keep the young Wellingborough side at bay. The next five tries were from the home side and showed Peterborough still has a way to go in terms of the complete performance. With time up Borough did it least finish on a positive note with wing Nic Langton scoring his third and his teams tenth try of the day. Van Uden added another one more conversion to give Borough a 60-36 win.

Director of Rugby Shane Manning's comments " to score ten tries in any game is something we are happy with and to take two bonus point wins in our first two games is something to be happy with also. It wasn't the perfect performance and the lads know that and will keep trying to improve as the season goes on. We had two players, Tom Kemp and Daniel Foreman make their league debuts and really look at the level. I have to mention Nic Langton who scored 3 great team tries and coaches Man of the Match Dylan Evans who was just excellent and made so many breaks and hundreds of metres during the game. Next up is the League favourites Bedford Athletic. It goes with out saying that we will have to be near perfect to topple them. We are at Fortress Fengate so hopefully the home crowd and can lift the lads. As players and coaches you love games like this, the chance to test yourself and you have nothing to lose, the pressure is on Ath so we just need to front up and get stuck into them from the start."
