Peterborough RUFC travelled to Old Coventrians on a very wet Saturday for their latest Regional 2 Midlands East fixture and came away with a dominant 55-0 win scoring 9 tries. Despite the persistent rain Borough still tried to play running rugby and were guilty at times of trying one to many offloads which meant it took 15 minutes before the first score. The deadlock was broken when Aram Jones went over after some sustained pressure. Head Coach Sam Crooks, who was playing his first game for 18 months after a ACL injury scored his first of two tries from close range. The try of the day went to Dylan Evans who left several opposition players grabbing at air as he ran in from 50 metres. At halftime Borough were 19 nil up and the main aim was to keep the home side scoreless for the rest of the game.
Borough then began to play some great wet weather rugby, putting the ball in the right areas and not letting Old Coventrians into the game. More tries came with Jones collecting 2 more for a hat-trick, Crooks scored his second, Will Bell scoring one, Dewi Pearce scored on the back of a rolling maul and lastly a penalty try. Byron Van Uden added three conversions and Captain Rob Jacobs added one. As pleased as the Borough coaches will be with 9 tries the fact that home side was kept scoreless will be even more pleasing. The win did come at a cost with Daniel "Tank" O'Connell fracturing his ankle with only couple minutes of the game remaining which will see him miss many months of action.
Director of Rugby Shane Manning's comments " the performance was good especially as our away form hasn't been great. Will Bell was again leading from the front and Dylan Evans try was one of the best of the season. To hold the opposition scoreless was the most pleasing aspect for me especially away from home. We now need to try and keep that momentum going into next week as we face Northampton Old Scouts who we haven't beaten for a couple seasons. "
