SUNSHINE AFTER THE RAIN FOR BOROUGH
On a very wet and windy morning as Peterborough Ladies travelled down the A1 to play St Neots in a top of table clash, with both teams having an unbeaten record going into the game. On the Peterborough Whats App everyone (apart from Erica, Jess and Gemma who don't like mud) was looking forward to playing rugby on some nice squishy ground. After a flood check with the opposition the game was on! The team that could weather the storm and come out triumphant would seek the glory of top of the league! Supporters were in for a treat!
Peterborough was first to get a try early on in the first half thanks to a strong run from outside centre Cheryl Smith, followed quickly by a try from Maddy Buckland with one of her signature snipping runs from the back of a ruck.
It was a great start for Peterborough, but the hosts weren't giving up easily as they piled on the pressure, camping out several times in Peterborough's half only to be met with a wall of yellow and red and some fantastic try saving tackles from full back Sarah Winder - this girl has no fear!
After fighting out of their own half with some strong runs from the forwards (too many to name) and a series of quick hands allowed Jess Pearce to storm over the line for a try, before the end of the first half.
Half time score St Neots 0 - PRUFC 15.
As the second half started Cheryl Smith was quick to get the scoring underway again, after finding a hole in St Neots defence to run from 22 with even an impressive pass and catch to herself, try was converted by Maddy Buckland. Peterborough was now starting to create space on the outside and it wasn't long before winger Hannah Longley took advantage of that and scored in the corner with some fancy steps around the opposition's defence. (On a personal note: Hannah's confidence is growing with each game this season her runs have been so strong and it's so nice to see from the sidelines) Another conversion from Maddy Buckland ensured the score line was building in Peterborough favour.
Despite this it was clear the hosts wanted some points on the board with their centre's and flankers making some strong moves towards the try line. Peterborough defence held until a penalty was given and the hosts decided to kick for the points, which was successful.
The rest of the game was very much an arm wrestle between the two sides trying to get more points on the board, Peterborough eventually got through making ground to allow Anna Kolancyzk to take it over the line minus her boot for the final try before the end of the game with Maddy Buckland making the conversion, Final Score: St Neots 3 - 36 PRUFC
Thank you to St Neots for a great game, it was nice to see so much respect for each other on and off the field. We look forward to the return fixture hopefully on a Saturday:) Next week Sunday 30th October we return to the cup competition (RFU Junior Cup - round 2) away to Boston RFC.
