Off to Therfield Heath, a site of special scientific interest and local nature reserve, and also the home of Royston Rugby Club. On a rather blustery day and set for a game of 11 a-side, P'boro weren't distracted by the picturesque surroundings. Starting off on the stronger foot scoring in the first minute of the game. Royston came back with a fury of attacking play putting P’boro under pressure and getting to grips with playing an 11-aside game. Royston were within sniffing distance of their try line but the defensive play from P’Boro kept them at bay until they were able to get a turnover ball and punch players over the gain line. Using the wind to its full advantage, great support play and some exciting break away runs was boosting the confidence levels. Tries from backs Maddie and Tyne and four forwards (Elinor (Captain), Laura, Poppy and Jo).
Half time score 0 – 32
With P’boro able to make multiple substitutions, legs were fresh and now the wind had dropped so it was win, win! The backs were hungry to get more of them on the score board. With lightening runs and some quick reactive thinking Maddie (Vice-captain) scored twice followed by Sarah. A Royston player took a knock to the head, so Laura went over to the opposition to give the centres a go. Another injury saw the game go to 10-aside but Royston were not going to give in easily and kept the game competitive and a hard-fought contest. The captain, leading by example, scored again, followed by second row, Lizzie, and the final try of the game by Maddie.
Wishing all injured player’s a speedy recovery. A big thank you to the referee and to Royston for their hospitality.
