Not a bad afternoons work.
Boro Ladies win the league, gain promotion and maintain 100% winning record (12 from 12), scoring 372 points and conceding 35. As Hugh said post match, to win every league match is unbelievably rare, and Bedford Blues Women were the unfortunate team to have to face a Boro team looking to sign the season off in style. And did they.
Jess P opened the scoring. This was quickly followed by a score from Erica (this was the best try of the season, a fact because Erica paid me £5 to say so !), converted by Maddy. Cody then scored her first try, converted by Maddy. Cheryl, not to be outdone scored a long-range try, converted by Maddy. This was followed by the now obligatory try from Gemma. Cody, the flying fending machine, scored her second, converted by Maddy.
So, as you can guess, some pretty good rugby, dominance from the forwards in the set piece, control at the ruck, gaining turnovers, and explosive running from the backs.
Half time Peterborough Ladies 38 - 0 Bedford Blues Women.
Into the second half, would Boro buckle under pressure and allow Bedford back into the match ? No. From the kick off, Laura caught the ball, waited for the first Bedford player to arrive and passed the ball to (Hoppy) Poppy to score, making the most of the dog leg in defence. From the restart the ball found its way to Cody in the Boro 22, the outcome was inevitable as she blitzed her way to the try line, including added fend offs ! By now Boro were absolutely flying, soft hands between Liv, Lucy and Eve saw Liv score, Maddy getting the extras. On the rare occasions where Bedford found themselves in the Boro half, they were (literally) smashed, conceding turnovers or knocking on. Sav was able to show that the forwards were as capable as the backs when scoring long range tries. Gemma scored another in the corner before Maddy scored a try under the posts (in front of the clubhouse) and converting. Eve was able to put the cherry on the icing on the top layer of the cake with a try on the final whistle.
Final Score: Peterborough Ladies 77 (seventy seven) - 0 (Nil) Bedford Blues Women
Apologies from me for the usual, name on the ball, don't let it bounce and nil nil schtick.
After the game, Hugh and Ade had the impossible job of picking a forward and back of the match, with the entire playing squad, of 22, making valid cases for it to be them.
Forward of the Match - Sav
Back of the Match - Maddy
Players Players - Cody and Eve
Dick of the Day - Lizzie
So a cracking game to complete a cracking season (other than tour next weekend). Champagne rugby in front of a pretty large crowd, and with a number of the players unavailable due to injury there to show that this squad is "freaking awesome". Heineken don't do league title winning rugby teams, but if they did ......
